Bienvenue

Hello! My name is Rebecca (in Australia we shorten this down to “Bec”). I’m a 30-year-old couturière living in Paris. The city I come from is small, and very isolated - I was born and raised in a place called Perth, in Western Australia, where there is lots of sunshine and everyone lives by the beach.

Perth is a nice place to live. It’s very safe and clean, and it’s  good if your goal is to live a quiet life, work a regular job, and raise a family. If you’re interested in a life that gives you a bit more, however, you’ll face some limitations there. Like I did. A city that’s often (unofficially) named “the most isolated city on Earth”, I knew growing up that it was only a matter of time before I had to leave. And who knows if I will ever go back.

Ever since I can remember I had a dream of coming to Paris to become an artist. I can remember being a small child telling people, “one day, I’ll be a famous artist living in Paris”. I’m not even sure I had the consciousness at that point to understand exactly where Paris was, or that France was on the other side of the world.

Almost three decades later and… here I am. An artist living in Paris. I work in fashion as a seamstress (another childhood dream) for a luxury brand here, and outside of working hours, I make art.

If I am honest, the journey so far hasn’t been easy.  I’ve learned now that, in fact, there’s a good reason why the majority of people don’t pursue their dreams in life. It’s because it can be so challenging. It’s a process that demands you to step up to higher levels of courage, strength and character. In fact, what I have learned is that it can be incredibly uncomfortable to take the required actions (and sacrifices) necessary in order to achieve one’s dreams.

My intention with this blog is to share my journey in coming to Paris, primarily as it relates to my French language-learning journey. I’ll be sharing my grammar study notes, language-learning tips, and my progress along the way.

Enjoy.
